LECTURER

Russell Stannard

Russell Stannard is the founder of www.teachertrainingvideos.com an award winning website that offers free help videos for teachers who want to incorporate technology into their teaching and learning. He is a NILE associate trainer and tutors on the MA programme. He also tutors at Kings College University in London on the MA in ELT. Russell was previously a Principal Teaching Fellow at the University of Warwick and the University of Westminster. He has received the Times Higher ‘Outstanding Initiative in Technology’, the British Council ELTons ‘Innovation Award’ and the University of Westminster ‘Excellence in Teaching’ award. He is truly an international speaker, having presented in 51 countries. He writes regular columns in the English Teaching Professional and Express Publishing blog. Russell has published widely on the topic of feedback, flipped classroom and assessment.

The main feature of this course is to help you understand how we can introduce technology into the language classroom in a principled and organised way.  Teachers tend to be very ad hoc in their approach to using technology. This course will help you to understand where technology can really impact on teaching and learning. It will also provide you with key technology skills in the most important technologies.

 

This is a highly practical course. It only focuses on the key technologies and only focuses on the ways technology can  support language learning.

 

Key aims

 

  • By developing digital literacy develop a clear understanding of the affordances of technology and how it can link into language learning.
  • Build knowledge of the key technologies that are really impacting on the language classroom.
  • Learn the strategies to correctly introduce and implement the use of technology.
  • Understand the role technology can play in and out of classroom and how it can support autonomy and independent learning
  • Build an understanding of some of the challenges and how these can be overcome.

Who is this course for?

This course is predominately for teachers to develop their digital literacy who  are currently having basic knowledge of using the internet but feels they want to extend their knowledge in a principled and organised way. This includes intermediate users of technologies and those who might already be using technology in the class but want a better understanding.

This is a highly practical course. It is vital you have a laptop computer. You can use a tablet if you choose but please keep in mind that you will be LIMITED with a tablet. A tablet does not work in the same way as a laptop computer.

What will the teachers learn?

  • Some of the recent research into the use of technology in the language classroom. This includes focus on assessment, collaboration, flipped classroom, blended learning, reflection, feedback, speaking skills and more.
  • A solid training in understanding the affordances that underpin the key technologies we can use in the classroom and how these link to language learning.
  • Hands on training in Edmodo, Google Docs, Google Slides, Padlet, Google Forms, Screen capture technology, YouTube, advanced searching techniques, Blogging and Website development.

 

How will the course be organised?

  • Daily opening sessions based around key topic presentations and discussions.
  • Hands on workshops where particpants will develop key skills and work with key technologies.
  • Participants are expected to keep a reflective diary during the course, give a short presentation on the final day. The participants will prepare and present one individual lesson plan and one lesson plan in groups based on technological tools learned during the course.

CERTIFICATE

1. Every Erasmus+ learning mobility member will receive a certificate of attendance of 48 academic hours issued by the teachers' qualification development centre Public Service Language Centre (accreditation  No. EV3-27)

2. Every Lithuanian participant will receive a certificate of attendance of 40 academic hours issued by the teachers' qualification development centre Public Service Language Centre (accreditation  No. EV3-27). 

REQUIREMENTS

  • To have a portable computer (laptop).
  • The participants shall comprehend and communicate in English at the level not lower than B1.

ACCOMMODATION
